After
our successful hike up Katahdin the weather turned for the worst.
It rained for days and our plan for hiking North Brother was not
looking too good. All of us (except Anthony) decided to stay an
extra day for the weather to clear. Finally, the rain stopped and
we headed for the mountain. |

Driving
from the gate to the trailhead took almost an hour. When we
finally arrived we were the only car in the parking lot and didn't
see another hiker for the entire day. The hike began easy enough
with a steady climb up the mountain. After a couple of stream
crossings and wet muddy sections we made it to the Mt. Coe trail
intersection. Continuing up the Marston trail we eventually
reached the pond where a moose
passed by a short time before we got there. However, we never did
see him. Parts of the trail were flooded due to all the recent rain and we had to take long leaps to keep our feet dry.
A short distance from the pond the trail became more steep and we
began our climb up to the ridge. |
When
we reached the ridge the trail leveled out. We found several
sections of trail that were flooded
since all the recent rains had no where to go. Little did we
realize it was only going to get worse later on. Reaching the spur
path to North Brother we all took a little break before the final
climb up the mountain. A short distance down the trail we lost the
path only to realize the "stream"
we were following is the trail we needed. This continued all
the way up the mountain. Some spots were total
washouts and other area's were turning into small
ponds. Eventually we made it to treeline
where we walked out into the clouds
and finally reached the summit. Since
the weather and views were terrible we didn't stay on top for very
long. Once again we slogged through all the water and made it back
to the Marston trail. On the way down the clouds began to lift and
we had some nice views
looking into the valley. We could see the slide
on South Brother, that used to be the way up, and Doubletop
mountain. The rest of the hike was uneventful and we made it
back to the car in about 7.5 hours after we left. Not too bad
considering the lousy trail conditions. |
