Mt. Isolation

Hiked on: October 10-11, 2010
(Tim and Jon - Total Distance: 19.5 miles)

View of Mt. Washington from the summit of Mt. Davis

This hike was a 2 day backpack trip over Stairs Mountain, Mt. Davis and Mt. Isolation. Jon and I followed the Rocky Branch trail, Stairs Col trail, Davis Path, Isolation trail and back to the Rocky Branch trail. We had a tough hike with lots of elevation, mud, puddles and stream crossings. However the views from the summits was spectacular.

Danielle, Anthony and I picked a great day to hike to Mt. Isolation. We started the day by dropping Anthony's car off at the Rocky Branch trailhead at 6:00am and then headed to the Glen Boulder trail to begin our hike.

Our plan was to go up the Glen Boulder trail to the Davis Path. Follow the path to Mt. Isolation and head out via the Rock Branch trail. This route is about 13 miles, but all of the climbing is done at the beginning. Once we made it to the Davis Path the trail was downhill the rest of the way.

It took us about 1 1/2 hours to reach the Glen Boulder where we decided to take a break. The boulder was a lot bigger than we imagined!

Once we reached the Davis Path we took another break to enjoy the views. It took us a couple of hours to reach Mt. Isolation, but we were heading downhill most of the way. We only passed one other hiker before we reached the summit.

There were a few other hikers already on the summit when we arrived. One of them was finishing up his 48 New Hampshire 4,000 footers so we all gave him a round of applause. Soon after a few other folks showed up who happened to be friends with the author of the "4,000 Footers of the White Mountains." One of the guys we met is on the cover of the book and the another guy took the picture!

The hike to Anthony's car was uneventful and long (7 miles), except for a bunch of river crossings.
