Mt.
Crawford sits at the southern end of Crawford Notch. It has an
open summit and spectacular
views in all directions. We
followed the Davis Path to the summit on a cold and snowy October
day. The trail starts by crossing a new foot bridge with a nice
view of the mountains in both
directions. It soon enters the Dry
River Wilderness where we decided to take a short
break. As we continued our way through
the trees we found some strange
mushrooms growing on an old log. Soon we reached some
ledges where we had some awesome
views of the notch. We could even see several snow
showers covering the nearby mountains. After another quick
break we continued on our way to the summit. |

The
spur path leading to the summit goes up a section of steep
ledges. Once on top, we took off our packs and enjoyed
the full panoramic
views. Mt.
Washington was covered by clouds, but views into the notch
and dry
river valley were great. Mt.
Willey and Mts. Webster
and Jackson formed walls on each side of the notch.
Further up the Davis Path we could see Stairs
Mountain and Mt. Resolution which we would head to
shortly. |
Hiking
from Mt. Crawford to Mt. Resolution was rather easy. We made good
time on the mostly level trail. Looking back, we could see Mt.
Crawford where we were standing just moments before. Along the
way we crossed more ledges
before finally arriving at the Parker trail which heads up to Mt.
Resolution. On top of the summit we found more great
views. The fall
colors were just starting to come out, but the clouds
kept building so we didn't stay on top for long. However, as we
started heading back Mt.
Washington finally made an appearance. The hike back seemed to
go rather quickly as we finished up this hike in about 8 hours. This
is one area I'd like to explore some more. Great views from many
locations and rather easy hiking on the Davis Path. |
